A Bustling Metropolis Manila

The capital of the Philippines, Manila, is a densely populated bayside city on the island of Luzon that blends Spanish colonial architecture with modern skyscrapers. The city spreads along the eastern shore of Manila Bay at the mouth of the Pasig River. Manila has been the principal city of the Philippines for many centuries with an international port of entry.

The city’s name, originally Maynilad, is derived from that of the nilad plant, a flowering shrub adapted to marshy conditions, which once grew in abundance along the river banks in the city. The name was shortened to Maynila and further to Manila, in present form.

Upon the outbreak of World War II, Manila was occupied by the Japanese in 1942. The city suffered some damage during the Japanese invasion but heavily destroyed during the fight for its recapture by US forces in 1945. Manila was in shambles when in 1946 it became the capital of the newly independent Republic of the Philippines. The city rebuilt rapidly, thereafter.

Presently, Manila, a bustling metropolis, is the political, economic and cultural hub of the Philippines.
