A city with immense historical significance, Bhuj is the capital of Kutch in Gujarat. Bhuj showcased to me a captivating journey through time.
In this post I am sharing 4 amazing sites of Bhuj that impressed me most, even though I visited the museum and palaces as well there.
Chhatarrdi Monuments
Chhatarrdi, also known as royal chhatris, are the monuments devoted to the warrior Rajput rulers of Kutch. Intricately designed, these umbrella shaped sandstone cenotaphs were constructed in the 18th century. Chhatris are wonderfully ornamented with the sculptures of deities. Many structures were damaged due to the earthquake in 2001 but some monuments are still intact. The most outstanding chhatri belongs to Rao Lakha. The depictions of this chhatri suggest that 15 of his wives gave up their lives at his funeral pyre. I had a serene walk around the grand chhatris.

Bhujiya Fort
Built atop Bhujiya hill on the outskirts of Bhuj, Bhujiya fort overlooks the whole town. Bhujia fort was built by Jadeja rulers of Kutch in18th century. Bhujiya hill was fortified further to strengthen the defense of the town. This fort has witnessed 6 major battles of Kutch. Presently, Bhujia fort is partially in ruins. Its parapet wall is damaged at many points. My exhilarating hike to the fort was rewarded with an awesome panorama at the top.

Smritivan Memorial
Smritivan is a memorial park and museum dedicated to the victims of the 2001 Kutch earthquake, a catastrophic event in the history of Gujarat. This memorial is situated on the Bhujiya hill with an impressive backdrop of Bhujiya fort. The sprawling memorial has 50 check dams that house the name plates of 13000 victims of the 2001 earthquake. The memorial consists of the world’s largest Miyawaki forest with over 4.5 lakh plants, spread over the entire Smritivan, to create a breathing monument that also serves as the lungs for the city. The Sun Point at the memorial is the highest point of the Smiritivan on Bhujiya hill. This open space provides a journey through the lunisolar calendar. Being at the Smiritivan was an emotional moment for me.

Khari River Canyons
Kutch is a natural laboratory for geomorphic study. Khari river canyons are another reason to admire the unusual geomorphic feature of Bhuj in Kutch region. I was so excited while traversing through these stunning shapes.
