Exotic Canyon Walk

Holding my mind captive with their seductive forms, this was my exotic canyon walk in Kazakhstan. In fact, canyon walk was the primary reason behind my recent trip to Kazakhstan.

Prior to this visit, some images of the Charyn Canyon with a striking resemblance to the Grand Canyon, caught my attention. I visited the Grand Canyon in the USA around nine years ago. Now I wanted to taste a dramatic walk into Charyn Canyon, the little brother of the Grand Canyon in Kazakhstan. Also called the Grand Canyon of Kazakhstan, fondly.

Charyn Canyon is located at a distance of 200 km from Almaty. Canyon is a part of the Charyn National Park spread over 154 km, close to the Kazakhstan China border. Charyn Canyon comprises a 80 km long formation of different shapes and colors along the Charyn river. Most popular part is the Valley of Castles, named appropriately due to their peculiar appearances. One part of the canyon is called the Devil’s Gorge considering haunted spirits inhabit there, as per local belief.

Geological formation of the Charyn Canyon consists of sedimentary red sandstone that went through an atmogenic process for millions of years, resulting in the sculpted masterpieces that we witness today.

There are countless dusty trails in the canyon to explore and elucidate. I had to often turn 360 degrees to absorb the magnitude of the natural wonder that unfolded in front of me. Main path of the Charyn canyon leads to the Charyn river. Camping is allowed near Charyn river.

Sharing stunning photographs that I captured during my gripping walk in the canyons.

Black Canyon is another outstanding landscape along the Charyn river. Black Canyon consists of basalt rocks. Very steep. Can make your head spin.
